JACKSON, MI – Blue Catalyst Group portfolio company Mi Padrino, an ecommerce platform focused on quinceanera and other milestone party planning for the Hispanic US market, developed a new business line in response to the COVI-19 pandemic. Like many other social gathering event-driven businesses, Mi Padrino revenues were impacted by the pandemic and the company had to scale-down operations and furlough employees in order to survive. However, they’ve seized an opportunity from the crisis and are serving the marketplace with a new revenue stream as a result.

Mi Padrino launched a charitable effort immediately after COVID-19 hit, which raised funds to purchase much-needed PPE products for essential workers across the state of Michigan. The platform was called MasksforMichigan and enabled raising donations from the public. As the word spread about their charitable efforts, Mi Padrino found themselves inundated with requests for non-medical masks and filters.  As part of their efforts to continue to look at creative and alternative ways to keep the company financially healthy while their core business saw COVID- related declines, a new idea emerged.

With their connections in Vietnam to the largest reusable mask factory, Mi Padrino was able to secure commercially produced, washable masks at a low price point, enabling Mi Padrino to sell the masks at a discount to comparable masks in the marketplace. Sourcing these masks not only makes them more affordable than many others on the market, but also gives the company a great, albeit short term, revenue stream, to enable this startup to manage cash through the crisis.

To eliminate any confusion with their core business, Mi Padrino established a simple, separate site DoYouMask to purchase masks. To be clear, this is not a pivot for the company, nor a distraction. It is simply a way for this "scrappy entrepreneur" to keep her company healthy through the pandemic. Mi Padrino has put masks on over 30,000 people in less than a month, which includes $60,000+ in revenue for the company.
